Skincare basics
Skincare is the practice of maintaining your skin health. It's for everyone, no matter your gender, age, or anything else. It is simply a form of hygiene as well as selfcare. However, with so many products on the market it can be overwhelming or intimidating.
We're here to tell you that if you're intimidated you don't have to stick to bar soap. While serums and masks can be fun and useful additions to your routine, all you really need is a cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen.
Below you can read how each product type should be used.

Cleanser
Cleanser is the first step of any skincare routine. It should be used morning and night, or once a day for very dry skin. It can be in the form of a balm, cream or oil depending on your preference and skincare needs. It should always be emulsified with water and rubbed into the skin for about 60 seconds before being washed off again. Cleansing removes both natural dirt and oil buildup as well as makeup and sunscreen.
Exfoliant can be both chemical and physical. It is used to remove dead skin cells and debris from the skin surface. It should be done after cleansing, no more than twice a week. Physical exfoliants should be gentle and washed off after use. Chemical exfoliants are made with acids, but should not burn or irritate the skin.
Serum should be used after cleansing. It is lightweight and has a high concentration of actives, so only a few drops are needed. It is used to target certain skin concerns. Serums commonly aim to target redness, dehydration, certain types of acne, and signs of aging.
Toner is a liquid skincare product. It should be applied after cleansing and exfoliating and can be done everyday. Toner is not essential but it can help balance the skin's pH, hydrate, and refine the appearance of pores. Depending on formulation, toner can target specific concerns such as acne, dryness, or aging.
Skincare steps
This is the second 'core' step of the routine. A dime sized dollop of moisturizer should be applied on the face and neck when the skin is damp after cleansing. This helps to seal in moisture, and leads to softer, healthier skin.
This is the final and possible most important step in any skincare routine. About the length of two fingers worth of sunscreen should be applied everyday. It is important to apply an SPF of at least 30 to the face in order to combat acne scars, dark spots, and clear signs of aging.
